They were devout followers of their religion and conducted a special ceremony to honor their ancestors, known as a srardha ceremony. During this ceremony, there was a strict rule that no one should touch the food until the main person, called Bhokta, had eaten.

Unexpectedly, a wandering holy man carrying a staff and a water jug, known as a danda and kamandala, arrived at their doorstep and asked for some alms, saying, “Bhavati Bhikshaam Dehi” (may you give me some alms). Sumati, who was preparing the meal, faced a dilemma. She wondered if this sadhu could be Lord Dattatreya Himself, a deity highly revered by her family. This was an extraordinary thought because even great individuals like Mother Yashoda initially saw Lord Krishna as an ordinary child until they realized His divine nature.

However, Sumati’s unwavering faith in Lord Dattatreya led her to take a bold step. She decided to offer alms and pay her respects to the sadhu. To her astonishment, the sadhu transformed into His original divine form, with three heads and six shoulders. Overwhelmed with tears of joy, Sumati saw Lord Dattatreya before her. He spoke kindly, addressing her as “Amma” (Mother), and expressed His pleasure with her offering. He offered to grant her any wish she desired.

Sumati, with her selfless heart, had the welfare of all humanity in mind. Instead of seeking personal blessings, she made an extraordinary request. She asked Lord Dattatreya to be born as her son. This was a remarkable act of selflessness because she already had two sons, one physically challenged and the other blind. Her wish was not for her benefit but for the well-being of all living beings. This selfless act exemplifies the noble nature of great souls who prioritize the welfare of others above their desires.

The Birth of Sripada Sri Vallabhacharya

In response to Sumati’s selfless wish, Lord Dattatreya blessed her, saying, “So be it.” On a special day called Vinayaka Chaviti, Sripada Sri Vallabhacharya was born. He was a divine form of Lord Dattatreya. It’s important to note that Lord Dattatreya, who is usually beyond birth and form, chose to be born on this sacred day, bringing immense blessings to the world.

However, he became proud and stopped following the right path. To teach him a lesson, Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shiva performed special ceremonies at three specific spots on Gayasurudu’s body – his head, navel, and feet. These spots are now known as the three Gayas.
